In-depth knowledge of metal bending and folding
What is metal bending?
Metal bending (or press braking) is a specialized method for shaping and folding thin metal sheets (typically up to approximately 20mm in thickness). These sheets can be made from materials such as galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, or aluminum.
Bending is one of the most common operations in sheet metal processing. A fully processed product typically undergoes the key operations of cutting, punching/stamping, bending, and welding.
The role of metal bending
- Complex forming: Transforms flat sheet metal blanks into highly complex 3D components.
- Enhanced structural rigidity: Creating ribs and bends significantly boosts load-bearing capacity and resistance to bending without increasing the sheet metal thickness.
- Reduced need for welding: Instead of cutting and welding multiple smaller pieces, bending creates a single, integrated component, thereby saving time and labor costs while improving the product's aesthetic appeal.
Bent profiles (V-bends, U-bends, multi-angle bends)
- V-bending: The most common method, utilizing a V-shaped die to create bend angles ranging from acute (< 90°) and right (90°) to obtuse (> 90°).
- U-bending: Creates two parallel bends simultaneously or via two consecutive bending steps to form a U-shaped channel.
- Multi-bending: Forms shapes such as zigzag patterns, boxes, and complex profiles through a sequence of consecutive bending operations.

Types of sheet metal materials suitable for bending
Each type of material possesses unique physicochemical properties, requiring different techniques and vibration parameters to avoid damaging the workpiece:
- Stainless Steel Bending
- Characteristics: Common stainless steel grades (SUS 304, SUS 316, SUS 201) possess high tensile strength and significantly higher elasticity compared to carbon steel.
- Requirements: Requires a press brake with higher pressing force and heavy-duty tooling. Additionally, when bending polished, matte, or color-coated stainless steel, protective film or die pads must be used to prevent surface scratches.
- Steel Plate and Carbon Steel Bending
- Characteristics: Steels such as SS400, Q235, and A36 offer good ductility, require moderate bending force, and exhibit relatively stable, controllable elasticity.
- Applications: Widely used for machine frames, electrical enclosures, cable trays, and factory structural components.
- Aluminum Bending
- Characteristics: Lightweight with high aesthetic appeal. However, certain aluminum grades (e.g., A6061-T6) are highly rigid and prone to cracking at the bend line if the bend radius is too small.
- Notes: Attention must be paid to the material temper (H14, H32, T6, etc.) and the rolling direction of the aluminum sheet, as well as the selection of an appropriate minimum bend radius (Rmin).
- Galvanized and Powder-Coated Sheet Metal Bending
- Characteristics: Galvanized (GI, GA) or coated sheet metal requires careful processing to avoid cracking or peeling of the galvanized layer or coating at the bend site.
- Solution: Use a bending die with an appropriate radius and clean the die groove to remove chips, thereby preventing marks on the sheet metal surface.
Practical applications of metal bending
Thanks to its versatility and flexibility, metal bending and folding is utilized across a wide range of modern industries:
- Industrial machinery manufacturing: Machine protective housings, support frames, motor mounting plates, chip chutes, and instrument casings.
- Conveyor and automation sectors: Conveyor covers, product transfer chutes, sensor brackets, smart racking systems, and control cabinet enclosures.
- Electrical and electronics industries: Indoor/outdoor electrical cabinets, cable trunking, cable trays, transformer housings, and protective metal component boxes.
- Construction and architecture: Sheet metal/stainless steel drainage channels, metal facade cladding, floor trims, ceiling framing systems, and fire-resistant steel doors.
- Interior design and consumer appliances: Stainless steel cabinets, commercial kitchen shelving, refrigerator and washing machine casings, and metal-frame furniture components.
